Jackson and Josephine County GMO Information

From GMO-free Josephine County:

A GMO (genetically modified organism) is the result of a laboratory process where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially forced into the genes of an unrelated plant or animal…and never appear in nature?
This is totally different than conventional plant breeding or hybridization. GMO crops cross pollinate (via wind-drift , carriage by bees and other pollinators , etc.) and contaminate non-GMO and organic crops, farms and private gardens?

From Our Family Farms Coalition:

Many global markets such as Asia and Europe, as well as a growing number of U.S. consumers, will not buy crops that have been contaminated with genetically engineered seed or pollen. Because family farmers can’t stop the drift of genetically engineered pollen or seed onto their farms, every day the wind blows is a day they risk having their crops rendered unsellable. When Monsanto’s genetically engineered wheat, for example, was found on just one Oregon wheat field last year, it resulted in an immediate ban on Oregon wheat exports to our biggest consumers in the Asian market.
